The Temporomandibular Joint, Explained
The technical name is a mouthful, but put simply, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) refers to your jaw joint. There is a TMJ on each side of your face, connecting your jaw to your skull.
When physiotherapists talk about TMJ pain, they are often referring to a range of symptoms that arise in the temporomandibular joint and the disc within the joint. The pain may also affect the teeth, tongue, and facial muscles around the jaw.
Jaw pain and disorders may, in some circumstances, worsen or otherwise be connected to problems in other areas of the body, including your neck, upper back, and even further down in your leg muscles.

Common Symptoms of Jaw Pain
If your jaw pain is ongoing or otherwise frustrating you, you may have a jaw disorder, commonly known as a TMJ disorder.
Common symptoms of TMJ disorders can include:

Diagnosing Pain in Your Jaw Joint and Jaw Muscles
Our highly experienced team will work with you to devise a treatment plan in line with a specific diagnosis. To start, we will investigate your symptoms, where they are occuring, and what the root cause may be.
We generally categorise jaw pain into these four categories:
- Articular pain, or pain that mostly originates from the joint
- Myofascial pain, or pain that mostly originates from the muscles and fascia
- Complex pain with multiple source points, including posture and neck issues, tongue posture issues, breathing issues, low-quality sleep, and different forms of stress.
- Nerve pain is less common than the others, but can also be a contributing factor.
Jaw pain and TMJ disorders can sometimes come about as a result of specific incidents, including sports injuries in the face or jaw, dental procedures like orthodontic worth or wisdom teeth removal, or stressful events.
Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, can also be a driver and/or result of jaw pain.
